How to Keep Tile Floors Clean

Tile flooring is beautiful and durable, but can be hard to keep looking its best. Bacteria, fungi and dirt can build up on the surface of tile floors, causing them to become discoloured.

To keep your tile clean, sweep or vacuum regularly and use rugs and door mats to catch dirt, grit and sand that can scratch your tiles. Then clean regularly with a basic cleaning solution.

Vacuum

Vacuuming is the first step to cleaning tile floors and it can help you avoid the need for harsh chemicals. It also removes loose dirt and dust from the surface and in grout lines before you start mopping, which prevents unnecessary grime buildup.

Make sure to use a vacuum with strong suction power that can handle the dirt and debris on tile floors. You should also look for a model that features a floorhead with bristles you can retract, which helps clear hard surfaces like bare tile. You should also consider a model that has a HEPA filter to reduce the amount of allergens you breathe as you vacuum.

It’s best to stick with a regular cleaning schedule when using a vacuum on tile floors. For example, you can vacuum your kitchen tile floors once every two weeks and your bathroom tile floors once a week (to keep germs at bay). This helps maintain cleanliness and prevents the need for deeper cleaning in between.

Vinegar

Vinegar is a natural cleanser that can eliminate germs, dissolve soap scum and mineral deposits, and leave tile surfaces looking clean and shiny. It’s also a cheap and eco-friendly cleaner. However, it’s important to use it correctly to avoid damaging your tiles.

To get the best results, you should always sweep your tiles first before cleaning them with vinegar. This will help prevent the build-up of dirt particles that can scratch your tile floor surface. You should also saturate the floor with enough water to create a deep clean.

You can mix 1 cup of white vinegar with 4 litres of hot water in a bucket and mop your tiles using this solution. Alternatively, you can spray the solution on your tiles and wipe them down with a damp cloth. After mopping, rinse your tiles with fresh water to remove any remaining vinegar residue.

Baking Soda

Sodium bicarbonate, more commonly known as baking soda, is a safe, inexpensive, natural substance that’s capable of replacing many harsh chemical cleaners. It whitens, disinfects and provides other useful properties that help keep bathroom surfaces clean without damaging them.

Applying baking soda to tile floors and leaving it on overnight can eliminate stubborn stains that would otherwise require scrubbing. It also helps control odors. To use, mix baking soda with a small amount of water to form a paste that you rub onto the area to be cleaned. Rinse thoroughly afterward.

Baking soda can be mixed with vinegar, rubbing alcohol and liquid dish soap to create an effective cleaning solution for tile floors that’s both economical and environmentally friendly. This DIY cleaning solution can be used to remove stubborn stains and keeps mildew and mold under control, too.

Add 1/4 cup of white vinegar, one tablespoon of rubbing alcohol and 14 cup of baking soda to two gallons of warm water for a floor cleaning solution that’s suitable for most tile flooring types. If desired, add a few drops of essential oil for an attractive scent.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is one of the most versatile non-toxic cleaning products you can use in your home. It can lighten and brighten surfaces, remove stains, and kill bacteria, viruses, mould spores, yeast, and fungi. It’s also safe to use around children and pets, and can be used to help keep pests such as ants and mice away from your home.

When combined with baking soda, hydrogen peroxide can be a powerful natural cleaner for tile flooring. The mixture acts as an effective bleaching agent to lift stains and discoloration, while the baking soda helps to dissolve grease and grime. When mixed with rubbing alcohol and liquid soap, it can be an effective solution for keeping water streaks and soap scum under control.

Combine equal parts of 3% hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to create a paste. Apply the paste to stained grout lines in your bathroom and allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes before scrubbing and rinsing.
