Roger Towne and Phil Dusenberry wrote the screenplay for The Natural, and Barry Levinson directed. It’s a beautiful film, but it’s not entirely faithful to the book. For example, Iris wants to build a life with Roy, but he prefers to use her for sexual pleasure and distraction. This difference reflects the larger tensions between a worldview that values sacrifice and a worldview that values pleasure. It’s a conflict that persists in American culture.
